Now, 10 years after construction, the town is entering Phase 2, which involves hardware upgrades to facilitate smarter use of energy and resources.Fujisawa SST\u2019s achievements in town-wide management and sustainable circulation of energy over the next 30 years will serve as a role model for future smart cities and towns, and even for society as a whole.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/section>\n<section class=\"ns02\">\n<div class=\"wrapper\">\n<div class=\"box\">\n<h3>Maximizing home use of renewable energy in detached houses, the town\u2019s core elements.<\/h3>\n<p class=\"title\">Upgrading solar\u2013storage systems<\/p>\n<p>For the town\u2019s first 10 years, the surplus renewable energy generated by solar panels on every detached house was sold back to the grid through the feed-in tariff (FIT) system.However, the FIT period has come to an end, spurring a shift to maximize home consumption of self-generated solar energy by using storage batteries. As part of this transition, residents will have various options for purchasing updated systems or leasing them through a third-party ownership plan. Such offerings will mutually benefit both residents and service providers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"title\">Upgrading energy equipment<\/p>\n<p>To achieve smarter energy consumption and meet environmental targets, the town is recommending that residents whose homes use a dual power gas and electricity system to replace it with the latest ENE-FARM household fuel-cell generator in order to enhance household energy use efficiency. For all-electric homes, an upgrade to the Ohisama Eco Cute heat-pump-driven hot-water system is recommended for its smart control of electricity usage during peak times.<\/p>\n<p class=\"title\">Smarter energy use based on energy data<\/p>\n<p>Energy use data collected from the HEMS integrated power generation and storage system for detached houses is used to assess and visually display the town\u2019s progress toward its environmental targets. Further analysis will allow models to be developed for optimal equipment specifications correlated to household size, usage patterns, and other factors. These insights can potentially be applied to other communities to offer innovative solutions for smarter energy use.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"box\">\n<h3>Fostering town-wide resource circulation-based lifestyles by analyzing the material flow of households and carbon footprint of community facilities.<\/h3>\n<p>Fujisawa SST is taking action toward shifting to a resource-circulating lifestyle that optimizes resource use and minimizes the use of new resources as much as possible. Fujisawa SST\u2019s Circular Town Project is Japan\u2019s first system prototype that employs a material flow analysis of single-family households to quantify such things as the town\u2019s inflow and outflow of resources. The project will identify issues and introduce new town services to enhance lifestyles, allowing residents and businesses to take their own approach to resource circulation. Fujisawa SST\u2019s continuing initiatives will have a positive impact on people\u2019s lives throughout the community and set an example for other circular cities.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t<img src=\"https:\/\/fujisawasst.com\/EN\/wp_en\/wp-content\/themes\/fujisawa_sst_2025\/images\/en_new0102.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"image\">\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n<div class=\"box\">\n<h3>Aiming for town-wide renewable energy circulation.<\/h3>\n<p>While prioritizing home use of the power generated at each detached house, the surplus will be aggregated and redistributed to balance town-wide supply and demand, including community facilities. This system of circulating and sharing renewable energy will ensure a stable and affordable energy supply throughout the town, enhancing overall community resilience.Looking ahead, we intend to expand this Fujisawa SST energy circulation model to create a sustainable new urban power scheme that extends to the municipality and neighboring areas.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t<img src=\"https:\/\/fujisawasst.com\/EN\/wp_en\/wp-content\/themes\/fujisawa_sst_2025\/images\/en_new0103.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"image\">\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n<div class=\"box\">\n<h3>To expand the town\u2019s self-creation and self-consumption of renewable energy, proactive use will be made of public spaces.<\/h3>\n<p>Installation of solar power generation facilities on publicly owned land, such as idle land along roads planned by the city, is being considered. The power generated would be used at nearby community facilities. We will work together with stakeholders to create a carbon-neutral town to serve as a model for other localities.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/section><\/div>\n<div class=\"old\">\n<section class=\"s02\">\n<div class=\"wrapper\">\n<p class=\"t01 font01\">TOWN SERVICES<\/p>\n<p class=\"t02\">Town service  <span>  &#8211; Energy &#8211;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>        <img src=\"https:\/\/fujisawasst.com\/EN\/wp_en\/wp-content\/themes\/fujisawa_sst_2025\/images\/en0101.png\" alt=\"\u30a8\u30cd\u30eb\u30ae\u30fc\" class=\"photo01 op\"><br \/>\n        <img src=\"https:\/\/fujisawasst.com\/EN\/wp_en\/wp-content\/themes\/fujisawa_sst_2025\/images\/en0101_sp.png\" alt=\"\u30a8\u30cd\u30eb\u30ae\u30fc\" class=\"photo01 os\"><\/p>\n<p class=\"t03\">Utilizing Sunlight and Breeze throughout the entire town of Fujisawa<\/p>\n<p class=\"t04\">Since the Great East Japan Earthquake on March 11, 2011, there has been increasing public demand for an energy paradigm shift to renewable energy solutions that are less vulnerable in times of disaster and have smaller environmental impacts, as primary energy sources to support everyday living.<br \/>\nUnder the new slogan of \u201cself-creation and self-consumption of energy\u201d, the Fujisawa SST project will provide energy services designed to complement lifestyles through to the next generation, enabling residents to generate the energy that they use in their own homes, through optimal utilization of solar power generation and other tools. Detached houses to accommodate some 600 households are to be constructed in the town. Each will be equipped with a solar power generation system and storage battery units.<br \/>\nThe houses will be designed so as to make possible lifestyles based on \u201cself-creation and self-consumption of energy\u201d through the\u201c SMARTHEMS\u2122 (Home Energy Management System)\u201d.<br \/>\nAll residents of this Fujisawa SST will be able to start enjoying eco-friendly and smart lifestyles, underpinned by optimal and stable utilization of renewable energy sources. Fujisawa SST is intended to be a sustainable smart town that achieves independent and symbiotic energy management aiming for maximum energy efficiency through state-of-the-art smart houses designed to thoroughly promote self-creation and self-consumption of energy.<\/p>\n<p>Flexible response to changes in the power supply environment and in people\u2019s lifestyles will enable adaptation to future energy usage behavior.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/section>\n<section class=\"s03\">\n<div class=\"wrapper\">\n<div class=\"dlbox\">\n<dl class=\"dl02\">\n<dt>Detached houses in Fujisawa SST to be equipped with a complete SMARTHEMS\u2122, integrating solar power generation, storage batteries and other devices aimed at the future<\/dt>\n<dd class=\"cf\">\n<p>Every detached house in Fujisawa SST will be equipped with a solar power generation system and storage batteries.<br \/>\nDevices for managing power consumption by home appliances will be integrated into a complete SMARTHEMS\u2122 (Home Energy Management System).<br \/>\nThis will be a house that is comfortable and eco-friendly to live in and enables optimal control of household energy consumption while utilizing electricity generated from Fujisawa\u2019s sunlight. Customers can choose between all-electric and fuel cell type homes (see chart below), according to which type best meets their particular lifestyle energy needs.<br \/>\nThis is how we aim to realize \u201cindependent and symbiotic energy management\u201d, with which people generate their own home-use energy and utilize it in an efficient and smart manner.<\/p>\n<p>              <img src=\"https:\/\/fujisawasst.com\/EN\/wp_en\/wp-content\/themes\/fujisawa_sst_2025\/images\/en0102.png\" alt=\"\u5199\u771f\" class=\"photo photo01\">\n            <\/dd>\n<\/dl>\n<dl class=\"dl02\">\n<dt>Smart management from power saving to selling by linking solar power generation systems, storage batteries and ENE-FARM<\/dt>\n<dd class=\"cf\">\n<p>Detached houses have the latest Energy Creation-storage<br \/>\nLinked System for Home, which links a solar power<br \/>\ngeneration system or storage battery to the ENE-FARM<br \/>\nhousehold fuel cell cogeneration system.<br \/>\nElectric power generated by respective systems can be used to meet household requirements and excess power can be sold.<br \/>\nIn the future, individual houses that are independent in energy terms will be linked to the Building Energy<br \/>\nManagement System (BEMS)of facilities in the town to create a group.<br \/>\nWe have our sights set on the establishment of an<br \/>\nindependent and symbiotic energy management system where the value is expanded by linking individual groups to the town&#8217;s Community Energy Management System (CEMS). Utilizing these systems enables you to respond to<br \/>\nnext-generation energy use styles, where the town and<br \/>\nresidents cooperate in electricity conservation.<\/p>\n<p>              <img src=\"https:\/\/fujisawasst.com\/EN\/wp_en\/wp-content\/themes\/fujisawa_sst_2025\/images\/en0203.png\" alt=\"\u5199\u771f\" class=\"photo\">\n            <\/dd>\n<\/dl>\n<dl class=\"dl02\">\n<dt>Achieving eco-friendly and comfortable living with the adoption of \u201cpassive design\u201d to streets or zones of the town, delivering sunlight and breeze to the entire town in Fujisawa City<\/dt>\n<dd class=\"cf\">\n<p>\u201cPassive design\u201d naturally utilizes wind power, sunlight, water, ambient heat and other natural resources of Fujisawa.<br \/>\n\u201c Passiveness\u201d is a concept enabling very comfortable living with minimal burden on energy resources.<br \/>\nIt incorporates traditional knowledge about homebuilding, such as the thatched roofs used on traditional Japanese houses. Based on this concept, roadside trees and garden paths are designed along with comfortable wind flows from the Shonan beach in Fujisawa SST. Furthermore, the energy management system will continue to supply energy in emergencies such as by distributing power to lighting, refrigerators, TVs and other pieces of equipment essential for daily life in accordance with selected settings.<\/p>\n<p>              <img src=\"https:\/\/fujisawasst.com\/EN\/wp_en\/wp-content\/themes\/fujisawa_sst_2025\/images\/en0401.png\" alt=\"\u5199\u771f\" class=\"photo\">\n            <\/dd>\n<\/dl>\n<dl class=\"dl02\" id=\"content01\">\n<dt>Establishing the Community Solar System, distributed renewable energy system, and other hardware throughout the town<\/dt>\n<dd class=\"cf\">\n<p>In the south of the town, a community solar power generation system was installed on public land.<br \/>\nUnder normal circumstances, this system will feed power into power grids and contribute to low-carbon lifestyles in the region.<br \/>\nIn the event of a disaster, it will become an emergency power source for Fujisawa SST and neighboring areas.<br \/>\nThe system consisting of compact units with solar power generation functions can be easily moved by unit.<br \/>\nIn the future, versatile use of this system will become possible as a distributed renewable energy source.<br \/>\nWe are building a disaster-resistant town by installing solar power generation systems and storage batteries in the Committee SITE, the community center in the Central Park.
